Background

Tami Castillo Shelton

Transitioning from pre-med to achieving degrees in theatre and dance, Tami Castillo Shelton has a unique ability to see connections between the arts and other educational disciplines. With her vast experience as a professional dancer, choreographer, musical theater director and arts educator for the past 26 years, this multi-faceted professional's work has been commissioned and critiqued both nationally and internationally.  As a performer, she has worked with many acclaimed choreographers and directors, such as Danny Lewis of Juilliard and Donald McKayle of the Alvin Ailey Company.

For two decades, Tami has instructed students of the arts, age groups spanning from pre-kindergarten to college. Years of working with teachers to learn what is relevant, effective and needed in the classroom helped develop her successful approach to incorporating dance and theatre into all fields of education. Due to her lengthy involvement in mentorship and teaching artist programs, Tami is a recent recipient of the Sunburst Award, given to heroes in Oregon and Washington communities who display exemplary commitment to arts in education. This cumulative expertise makes Tami an ideal teaching artist in the field of dance for the SIETA development program.

I have also seen her work in other venues and found her work to be creative, constantly evolving, and designed to bring out the best in others while showcasing strengths that already exist. Tami is intelligent with deep understandings of people and the worlds in which they exist. I highly recommend Tami as a leader and an innovative teacher for learners of all ages."
